About
The NIEHS Superfund Research Program focuses on scientific investigation and clean-up of hazardous environmental exposures. This annual gathering of Superfund grantees and trainees will highlight the progress made on identifying, investigating, and cleaning up hazardous waste sites to protect human health and the environment. The 2.5-day program will feature impactful research, community engagement, research translation, and training innovations from across the country.
The broad mandates set forth by the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) of 1986 guide Superfund investigators’ work in developing:
- advanced techniques for the detection, assessment, and evaluation of the effects on human health of hazardous substances,
- methods to assess the risks to human health presented by hazardous substances,
- methods and technologies to detect hazardous substances in the environment, and
- basic biological, chemical, and physical methods to reduce the amount and toxicity of hazardous substances.
